In this interview with The Huffington Post, Laura explains how she started out with her first book, how she came up with the design principles for her second book, and how she continues to innovate in her design work.
In the book, Bellacosa describes her process as a “bicycle” in which she would start with a sketch, go through all the pieces in the sketch, and then begin sketching the final product.
Then she would begin working with a designer, who would refine the design in various ways until the final version came to fruition.
In this interview, she shares some of the ways in which the design process differs from her other books, and the reasons why she decided to focus on the book instead of doing something more in-depth with her other projects.

Here are a few things that she said that I think are helpful to you:Design is about taking a snapshot of your current environment and making sure that it’s representative of what your design will be.
Design is really hard to do well.
I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it is hard.
So the way you do that is to make the best possible decisions as you go.
I want the book to be very clear about what I want it to be and how it works.
I’m a big fan of design thinking.
I love the idea of going to the client and seeing what’s going on.
I don’t know if I’ve ever worked with a client that really thought about what they were doing.
I feel like that’s how the whole design process goes.
You’re never sure what’s the best choice, because the whole time, the client is thinking what the client wants.
If the client’s thinking, ‘Why am I getting a book called this?’ you don’t want to have to say, ‘That’s the one I wanted.’
You’re always thinking, what are we going to do with this?
So you’re always working on something.
It’s hard to be clear with a design.
It’s so important to have the right kind of balance of clarity.
The book has this balance, so if you have too much clarity, then the book feels like a lot of information, so you lose your way with the client.
The way you can make that balance is by having a clear idea of what you’re going to be looking at.
The book is about having a big vision.
It doesn’t matter if you’re making a design for a TV show, a film, or a billboard.
You don’t have to have a plan.
The plan is what makes it work.
Design is about being in control of your ideas, so I’ve always been interested in trying to be the first one to present something.
When you’re working on a design, the first thing you’re thinking about is what you want the design to look like, and you can’t really imagine that you might not want the client to like what you’ve done.
You’ve got to do it, and so the more you try to figure out what you think you want to do, the more frustrated you get with yourself.
I think this book is really about saying, ‘Look, this is what I think.’
There are a lot more details that I can’t put in.
I can show you a lot that I want to show, but I don.
And the more details I can put in, the better.
If you want a more traditional book, I think it’s really important to focus more on the story.
